US Silver Quarter

US Silver Quarter (pre-1965)

Washington Quarter (1932-1964)
This commonly circulating design was originally planned to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth with its release on February 22, 1932. Design delays held it up until August 1 when it became a regularly minted coin. The quarter was designed by John Flanagan whose initials JF can be found on the base of the neck. Mint marks were on the reverse below the wreath from 1932 to 1964. There were no mint marks in 1965 - 67 to prevent these coins from being collected during the coin shortage. Only clad quarters have been made since 1965 while prior years contained 90% silver.

Liberty Standing Quarter (1916-30)
The Liberty standing quarter began to circulate in 1916. Designed by Hermon A. MacNeil, MacNeil's last initial can be found at the near right of the lowest star on the obverse side. In 1917 the design was changed slightly and used until 1930. The starts on the reverse were rearranged and the eagle was raised. No quarters were made in 1922. In 1925, the pedestal on the obverse was recessed and the date set within the recess.
