US Silver Dime

US Silver Dime (pre-1965)

Roosevelt Dime (1946-64)
Liberty dominated the designs of American coins until the 20th century. After the Lincoln cent in 1909, prominent Americans have been portrayed as the President Franklin D. Roosevelt in this dime. It has been issued each year often at all three mints. The mint mark is on the reverse, left of the bottom of the torch through 1964. Designer John R. Sinnock's initials appear to the left of the date.

Mercury Dime (1916-45, excluding '22,'32-33)
Also known as the winged Liberty dime, the design is a respresentation of Liberty instead of Mercury as in the colloquial name. The wings crowning Liberty's cap is suggested to symbolize freedom of thought. The reverse is a fasces (rods and ax) standing before an olive branch. The mint mark is to the left of the bottom of the fasces. The designer's initials, AW for A.A. Weinman, appears in the field to the right of Liberty's neck.
