US Silver Half Dollar (pre-1965)
Walking Liberty Half-Dollar (1916-1947)
Also known as the Liberty standing or walking half-dollar, this coin was first struck in 1916 and last minted in 1947. The coin was not made in all mints for every year. Mint marks appear on the reverse lower left under the stunted pine. On the 1916 and some 1917 coins, the mint mark appears on the obverse under the motto. The monogram AW to the right of the base under the eagle's wing is for the designer, A.A. Weinman.
Franklin Half-Dollar (1948-1963)
The Franklin half-dollar began in 1948. The mint mark when used is located above the Liberty Bell supporting beam. The initials of the designer, John R. Sinnock, appear on the shoulder above the letter D in the word GOD.
Kennedy Half-Dollar (1964)
First issue and only 90% silver coin was in 1964 struck in both the Philadelphia and Denver mints. Those made between 1965 through 1970 were silver clad (40%), and since 1971 copper-nickel clad. The D mint mark appears on the left side of the reverse under the eagle's claw. The obverse was designed by Gilroy Roberts of the US Mint and his initials appear on the truncation of the bust. The Presidential coat of arms on the reverse is the work of Frank Gasparro also of the US Mint. The initials FG appear between the eagle's tail feathers and the talon holding the arrow bundle.
